marginalia. Many readers swear by writing directly in books because annotation turns reading into a live argument with the text and makes rereads richer. Others hate it, especially in used or rare books, and prefer notebooks, index cards, bookmarks, or digital systems that preserve context without permanently altering the copy. The useful distinction that surfaced is that margin notes and written reactions may deepen engagement, while highlighting, circling, and crossing out often just create the feeling of effort without much retention benefit.
