    People did not see this as just a private directory. They immediately asked whether corrected names and locations would be contributed back to OpenStreetMap, because hobby sites die and shared infrastructure outlasts them. That is a governance expectation as much as a technical one. Once your product visibly depends on a commons, users start judging it by whether it strengthens that commons.

    If your startup or side project sits on top of open data, publish a clear policy on what you will contribute back and when. That builds trust and can reduce long-term maintenance by turning your fixes into shared infrastructure.

    Facts are easy, booking links are where incentives bite

    The collaboration offer from GolfCourse.wiki surfaced the less obvious business problem. Course facts may be legally safer and easier to aggregate, but distribution and booking links pull you into platform politics fast. One commenter warned against GolfNow-style middlemen because small courses can end up handing over margin they cannot spare, much like hotels dealing with Booking.com. A directory that looks neutral can still shape who captures value.

    Be deliberate about outbound links and monetization before growth locks them in. Direct booking links may be harder to source, but they can be a product advantage if your audience cares about supporting small operators.

    For vertical maps, invest in reporting tools, moderation workflow, and visible turnaround time as early as the map itself. Users will forgive incomplete data if they see corrections land quickly.
