Japanese court overturns Red RAW video patent

The linked report says Panasonic succeeded in Japan where Apple, Sony, and Nikon had failed, getting a Red patent overturned that covered parts of compressed RAW video recording in-camera. RAW video here means sensor data kept before the usual full image processing pipeline, which preserves more latitude for color grading and post-production. The disputed piece was not the general idea of RAW, but Red’s claims around compressing that data before debayering or otherwise storing internal compressed RAW in ways many camera makers saw as broad enough to block useful features.

If you build or buy pro video gear, watch for camera vendors and codec partners to revisit internal RAW recording features, licensing, and pricing in Japan first and possibly elsewhere later.
