Omarchy itself is an Arch-based, keyboard-first desktop environment built around Hyprland and a pile of curated defaults, automation, theming, and now AI-assisted setup and troubleshooting. It is pitched less as a new underlying operating system than as a polished developer workstation that makes Linux feel assembled on purpose instead of stitched together from packages, dotfiles, and window manager configs.
That framing largely drove the reaction. People actually using Omarchy were enthusiastic about the day-to-day experience. They described fast installs on old or cheap hardware, a coherent keyboard-centric workflow, bundled developer tools, cleaner theming across apps, and a setup that makes Linux approachable without turning it into a generic consumer desktop. The strongest pro-Omarchy case was not technical novelty. It was product discipline. Linux already has the pieces, but most desktops still feel like a toolbox. Omarchy is trying to ship a finished room.
The skepticism was just as clear. A lot of readers think the core artifact is still basically an opinionated Arch setup, not something that obviously justifies foundation-scale money or the rhetoric about a "malleable computer of the future." Several people said the value is real for newcomers, but mainly as assembly, curation, and marketing rather than breakthrough engineering. Others questioned why the money is not going directly to upstream projects or existing distros, especially given Omarchy’s dependence on Hyprland, Arch, and other open source work beneath it.
A few practical points came through. Tiling remains the biggest adoption hurdle. Fans said the learning curve is steep but worth it once the keybindings click. Detractors found the window behavior miserable, especially on small laptop screens. Hardware support looks broader than some assumed, including reports of
Nvidia working out of the box and successful installs on old laptops, Chromebooks, Framework machines, and Intel Macs.
Apple Silicon support exists only through separate Asahi-based efforts and is still constrained by the state of that upstream work.
The political layer around DHH also soaked up attention and predictably generated more heat than signal. The useful bottom line is simpler: some people will avoid the project because they do not trust him or other associated backers, while others see that as irrelevant next to the chance to pour real money and attention into desktop Linux. The more consequential point is that Omarchy is testing whether Linux adoption can be driven by taste, defaults, and narrative in the same way Rails once packaged web development. Plenty of people hate that idea. It may still work.
