Orbify showed an interactive demo for turn-by-turn navigation that warps the map into a curved surface, trying to combine a driver's-eye sense of the next turn with the overhead context of a normal map. The pitch is easy to grasp even if the movie reference is not. Instead of choosing between flat 2D and forward-looking 3D, the route bends upward so near road geometry sits in front of you and farther route context climbs into a top-down view.
People largely agreed the core idea is legitimate. It gives a faster visual read on forks, ramps, and urban turns where top-down maps can be ambiguous. Several commenters said it feels especially promising for lane planning, landmarks, walking, cycling, or dense interchanges. The problem is the current execution. Sharp turns hide the route immediately after the turn, which is exactly when drivers need to know whether another turn or lane change is coming. The projection also makes distance, road width, and off-route points harder to judge than on a conventional map. The best suggestions converged on adaptive behavior already familiar from good navigation apps: flatten or zoom out on long stretches, rotate or re-aim the view toward a point several seconds ahead on the route, and transition into a more angled turn-aware view only when useful.
The dominant reaction was still physical discomfort. Many people said the turn animation triggered motion sickness or a roller-coaster feeling within seconds, including people who do not normally get sick from screens or games. Others hit practical issues before they could even judge the UI. The demo was heavy, sometimes stalled at 90 percent load, and the author said it pulls a 100 MB
Gaussian splat file each time. That pushed some of the conversation away from navigation and toward basic product readiness. There was also immediate skepticism about the “patent pending” label. Commenters dug up
prior art from BERG’s 2009 “Here and There” work, an older map-display patent, and even much earlier multiperspective graphics references. The takeaway was blunt: the visual trick is old enough that only a narrow implementation claim looks plausible, if anything does.
